Alan Mather was the cousin of Florrie Lindley, who accompanied her to a Builders' Federation dance in May 1963, where they bumped into Florrie's neighbours, Elsie Tanner and Len Fairclough. Elsie was very taken with the young man, though he wasn't properly introduced to her. Later on, she asked Jim Whitehead, a friend of Len's, if he knew Alan and when he told her of the exact relationship between the two cousins, she expressed sympathy for Florrie as she thought that for once in her life she had found a man for herself.

Sometime prior to April 1964, Alan had married a "nice girl" and moved to Leicester. The couple had written to Florrie a couple of times asking her to go and visit them, but she told a somewhat surprised Elsie that she hadn't had chance.

Alan Downer who later wrote five episodes of the programme between 1979 and 1980 was booked to play the character and was credited as such in TV Times, but was replaced for unknown reasons on the studio recording by Graham Lines.
