Alexander "Alex" Warner is a waiter at Roy's Rolls.

Alex, who has Down syndrome, is the son of Nessa Warner and Alan Matthews. Having always been close to his aunt Cathy Matthews, Alex carried the guilt of knowing that her late husband and sister had betrayed her. When Cathy learned the truth in 2016, she was angry with Alex for not telling her but decided not to let it harm their relationship.

Having left his mother's home to live with Cathy and Roy Cropper in 2016, Alex lived at 12 Coronation Street for a while before moving into assisted living.

Biography[]

Alex Warner was born on 21st July 1987. He was the result of an affair between Nessa Warner and her brother-in-law Alan Matthews which they had managed to keep secret from their partners Nigel Warner and Cathy Matthews. When Alex was young, Nigel found out that Alex wasn't his and left Nessa; Cathy, still in the dark, was led to believe that he had done so because of Alex's Down syndrome. Nessa eventually told Alex the truth once he was old enough to handle it.

In 2015, Alex paid a visit to Roy's Rolls, where Cathy - now a widow - worked, and met her partner Roy Cropper. Cathy made him a wedding cake to mark the occasion, complete with figures on top, telling Roy that he had had a thing about such events since he was eight years old. From this, Roy gained the impression that he was still a child so when introduced to Alex, he was momentarily taken aback to find that he was 28 years old. He recovered his manners quickly and welcomed Alex. The reason for Alex's visit emerged when Nessa rang Cathy to say that she and her son had had a row over his taking a girl to the pictures when he was already going out with another. Alex gave the excuse that he liked both of them and arranged to stay overnight at the cafe flat to avoid Nessa.

Alex's strained relationship with his mother meant that he would occasionally turn up in Coronation Street looking for a bed for the night. When a distraught Nessa informed Cathy and Roy that Alex had gone missing, a tipsy Alex was found safe and well at the Rovers Return, stating that his phone battery had died while he was staying at a friend's house. In January 2016, he turned up at the cafe, revealing that he'd been in another disagreement with Nessa and lost his job. Later in the month, still without employment, he was offered a temporary position at the cafe while Roy was away in Hastings, looking after his mother Sylvia Goodwin.

While working with Alex, Cathy became aware that he was neglected by Nessa and spent his time getting drunk with friends. When Nessa decided to move to Inverness with her new boyfriend, Cathy got Roy to agree to let Alex move into the cafe flat. However, the booze-ups continued; when Roy returned from Hastings in May, he interrupted Alex and his mates in the flat and, outraged by the sight of spilled drink and pizza all over the carpet, he threw them out. At the end of the day Cathy and Alex packed up their belongings but just before they left, Roy apologised for his outburst and allowed them to stay, with Alex kept on at the cafe permanently.

The next month, Alex drove Roy's car to take his new friend, Gemma Winter, to the cemetery to visit the grave of her best friend Callum Logan. While out, Alex was caught driving over the limit and a speeding ticket was issued to Roy. Roy quickly realised that Alex was driving and upon his return, Alex confessed to Roy and Cathy. Adopting his usual principled stance, Roy intended to call the police to tell them who was behind the wheel, but Cathy persuaded him not to and eventually Alex turned himself in and was cautioned.

In September, Alex decided to buy one of the flats in Pat Phelan's Calcutta Street development. Cathy approached Nigel Warner for a loan, and was stunned to be told that he wasn't Alex's natural father and that it was in fact her late husband Alan. The discovery that Alex had known the truth was a blow to Cathy, and she encouraged him to go and live with Nessa. She changed her mind when Roy broke down in County Durham while driving the lad to Inverness and she thought they'd been in a vehicle fire.

Cathy was due to marry Roy in December that year, but they split up when Cathy heard a Dictaphone recording of Roy saying that he didn't love her. Alex went with Cathy when she moved out of the cafe flat and into 6 Coronation Street with Yasmeen Nazir, but within weeks he'd moved into assisted living due to a lack of space at No.6. He stayed close to Cathy, and in January 2018 he accepted her invitation to live at 12 Coronation Street with her and her new partner, Brian Packham.

In April 2019, Alex borrowed money from loan shark Rick Neelan to buy Cathy a bracelet. He realised his mistake when Rick took his passport and post office card as collateral, but Rick's employee Gary Windass was able to retrieve them, at the cost of receiving a beating from Rick. Cathy and Brian eventually paid off Alex's debt to get him out of trouble. Two years later, when Cathy became the target of online abuse for suggesting that Steve and Tracy McDonald had spent the charity money raised in Oliver Battersby's memory on themselves, Alex was caught in the crossfire and went to stay with Nessa for a while to get away from things.

By December 2022, Alex had moved out of No.12 and was back in assisted living, though he carried on working at the cafe.
