Andrew Downie (born "Andrew Fraser" on 26th May 1922 in Edinburgh, died 15th April 2009 in Kent) appeared on Coronation Street in August 1965 as old folks' home superintendent Mr Charlesworth.

He began his working life working in a bacteriological laboratory and as a result, was not allowed to volunteer for the forces in World War II, despite applying three times. A talented singer, he studied at the Royal College of Music and the Paris Conservatoire. His acting career began at the 1947 Edinburgh Festival in The Thrie Estates and as well as acting, he appeared in several Gilbert and Sullivan productions.

His television debut was in 1952 and his other credits include BBC Sunday-Night Theatre, Emergency-Ward 10, Redcap, Dr. Finlay's Casebook, Doctor Who, Upstairs, Downstairs, Play for Today, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, The Professionals, The Sweeney, Take the High Road and Monarch of the Glen.

Films include Tunes of Glory and Two Way Stretch while radio work includes adaptations of The Red Badge of Courage and Saturday-Night Theatre.

On stage, he appeared in productions of The Two Bouquets, The Crystal Heart, Three Sisters and Old Time Music Hall.

Outside of the world of the arts, he was a keen rugby union player, playing in the 1st XV of Wasps and London Scottish.
