Anne Reid MBE (born 28th May 1935 in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne) is a British actress best known for her role on Coronation Street as Valerie Barlow, which she played from 1961 to 1971. A very popular character, she quit in 1971 and Val died after being electrocuted. This shocked the media and fans sent sympathy cards and wreaths to Granada. Reid has since revealed that she chose to leave the series primarily because she wanted to try her hand at more comedy, and this simply was not possible to do so with the character of Val.

She married Coronation Street producer and writer Peter Eckersley on 22nd May 1971.

Her other credits include Hancock's Half Hour, Doctor Who, Dinnerladies, Wallace and Gromit: A Close Shave, Ladies Of Letters, Marchlands and Last Tango in Halifax. Anne has also appeared in the 2006 comedy film Hot Fuzz with Simon Pegg.
