Arnold Ridley OBE (7th January, 1896 - 12th March, 1984) was a British actor and scriptwriter, most famous for his role as the elderly Private Godfrey in the classic situation comedy Dad's Army from 1968 to 1977. A writer of numerous plays and film scripts, including the hit The Ghost Train, his other acting credits include the radio soap The Archers, The Avengers, The Caesars and Crossroads.

Arnold played Tatton Park tour guide Herbert Whittle on Coronation Street in August 1967, returning in April 1969 (after he had made his debut in Dad's Army) as protesting pensioner Jim Gilbert.

He was awarded the OBE in 1982 for services to the theatre.
