Arthur Bromley was a local trader who, as a member of the Weatherfield lodge of the Masons, issued tickets to Annie Walker to attend a Ladies’ Evening ball in March 1980. Annie invited fellow licensee Olive Taylor-Brown with her and when they arrived without their tickets, Annie insisted that the Commissionaire fetch Mr Bromley to vouch for them, which he refused to do as it was more than his job’s worth. Annie was either ignorant of Mr Bromley’s true position in “Weatherfield Society” or she was hiding the information from Olive - as the regulars in the Rovers commented on to each other, Arthur in fact ran a butcher’s stall on the market where he sold foul-tasting mince that many refused to buy.
