Bernard Cartwright was a shopkeeper in Weatherfield who, after discovering that his wife was having an affair, murdered both her and her lover. He was hanged in 1897. This turn of events led to Cartwright Street to be renamed Victoria Street.
Ken Barlow began researching the history of the local area in February 2000 and discovered Victoria Street's former name. Having printed an article in the Gazette asking for information about the Cartwright murders, Ken found out that the man in question was the maternal grandfather of Fred Elliott. Afraid of the family secret being leaked, Fred threatened Ken with legal action if he spread the news.
