Fandom updates - Women's History Month and MediaWiki 1.39

Hey everyone! As we near April, I wanted to post two updates from March so you're all up to date. Let's dive in!

Women's History Month

Fandom kicked off of the Women's History Month (WHM) celebrations earlier this month and as we approach the second half I wanted to highlight it again as more initiatives are coming this week!

As a reminder, the national theme for this WHM is Embrace Equity. Equitable opportunities should be matched with equitable action to drive progress. This is about making sure there are inclusive spaces promoting equity and belonging - this has a big impact. Equity requires us to be fair and impartial and to shift from considering opportunities to committing to true equality through action.

Fandom initiatives

Fandom initiatives

Fandom are doing a wide range of activities to make sure communities can get involved in BHM celebrations. This includes a watch party and roundtable, as well as a dedicated Spotify playl…

All the Corrie appearance stats you never needed to know

This is a follow-up to our #StarsoftheStreet series on Twitter we wrapped up on New Year's Day. Ever since we completed our mission of having cast lists for every episode, I've wanted to do an analysis of the numbers that goes deeper than Corriepedia normally does - the iceberg of Corrie appearance stats if you like. We've spent a few weeks crunching the numbers, so here are all the stats about Coronation Street you never needed to know.

How has the number of actors in the cast changed over the years? This is the number of regulars who have appeared at any point in one calendar year. Note that if a character is recast at some point in the year they are still counted as one. The second column is number of main cast who appear in each episode th…

Fandom updates - Mobile theming is here!

Hey everyone - today I bring news that mobile theming is here!

This means that the colors set in the Theme Designer will apply to both desktop and mobile. The following variables apply for this:

  • background
  • sticky nav
  • header
  • accent
  • link
  • article background color
  • background image
  • heading font

Admins will receive a prompt to check Special:ThemeDesigner for wiki contrast issues. Read about why having proper color contrast is so important for the creation of accessible web content.

Once there are no contrast issues anymore, admins can enable mobile theming on the wiki. Without fixing these issues, it will no longer be possible to make any theming changes.

There's more! With this new update, theme designer now also shows a mobile preview! Admins can thus verify…

Fandom Wiki Rules and Blocking policy updates

Hey guys!

Recently, Fandom staff posted updates to the Fandom Wiki Rules and Blocking Policy. As a reminder, this is a global policy to aid the wellbeing of communities that all wikis have been following since 2021. These new changes go into effect on April 4th.

  • An added section outlining what it means to be a good admin. Some tips include being open to users asking for advice, not acting as if you are the “owner” of the wiki, assuming good faith etc
  • The “Need ideas for rules?” section was moved to its own page and added more example rules to be used if needed.
  • An added section requiring a pathway to adminship. This is a system your community can set up to allow for long-time users who care about the wiki and community to eventually become admins…

A Corrie fan in Cumbria

Hi everyone! Back with another blog post on a vaguely Corrie-related topic.

As this is 2021, my holiday plans fell through so I dusted off some old plans to visit the filming locations from the coach crash episode from 1969 (#923 if you're interested). As a Scot, the Lake District wasn't that far away and yet my experience of Cumbria didn't extend further than the M6 motorway. Finally, I decided to put that right. Here's the match report.

The night before: I sit down to plan my trip and the internet goes out. After turning the modem off and on again fails, I have a rant on Whatsapp and go to bed.

7.00am: I wake up and the internet's back on. Clearly it was just toying with me. I start planning my route.

10.30am: I belatedly set off, with a ful…

Book: 60 YEARS OF CORONATION STREET

I'm the proud owner of a copy of the official history. Marked price says it's 20 quid in the UK. All copyright, of course. but could be handy for fact-checking. Good 6page index, not perfect - no entry for Sunita's maiden name. for example. List of most residents of the Street's houses, past and present, with varying-length biographies of characters and/or actors. Four beautiful family trees. Fold-out section showing the evolution of the sets and a current map of the three or four main streets. I can't see reference to it here but I guess I got tired of seeing "Template:60 years..." when I searched...

A Corrie fan's fantasy 2010s boxset

We're into a new decade now and if we're lucky that means Corrie fans can soon expect a new DVD boxset from Network covering 2010 through 2019. 80 episodes over ten discs, like the previous five sets, to take us up to the present day.

But that's a big if. And I'm impatient to see how the highlights of the 2010s stack up to the other decades. To that end, as a thought experiment I've gone through the events of the last ten years and made my own list of episodes that could feasibly end up on such a boxset.

Taking my lead from the existing sets, I've picked out eight episodes per year, avoiding any that have already been issued on DVD (meaning no tram crash or factory explosion from 2010). As the 2000s set contained one hour-long episode for ea…

Help with writing character lead sections

Hi everyone, this is my helpful guide to writing the lead sections on character pages - what to include and what to leave out. These sections are found on the articles of every regular and are very important to Corriepedia as they are often the first thing someome reads when browsing the site. For that reason, I want them to have a consistent style in terms of content, structure and length.

The goal is that they should contain all the essential details about the character in question, a condensed version of the full article if you will covering the broad strokes such as their marriages, children, any notable jobs they held, and their key storylines, written as concisely as possible.

To illustrate this, here are three examples of a 'good' int…

The history of Coronation Street backwards

Coronation Street premiered in 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. In its early days, the soap opera examined the effects of the coronavirus on a typical working-class community in the northern town of Weatherfield. However, within weeks producer Iain MacLeod decided that the programme would shun all mention of the virus and instead develop the marriage of breakout characters Yasmeen and Geoff Metcalfe, with kindly Geoff helping to bring his estranged wife out of her shell. The formula was an immediate success and after four months broadcaster ITV doubled the number of weekly episodes from three to six.

After Iain MacLeod moved to Emmerdale, Kate Oates took over Coronation Street. Under Oates, the programme focused heavily on social i…

Which episode should I start at?

I've not properly watched Corrie yet, but I was wondering whens the best time to jump into it. I really want to start with the 2000s episodes and work my way up from there, but wheres the most ideal episode to start?

I like all eras, all years, but I have to say that the choice of starting the ITV3 repeats in Jan 1986 was a very sensible one in many ways.--Jtomlin1uk (talk) 03:05, January 31, 2020 (UTC)

Jim McDonald/Richard Wilmore

Whilst watching a recent episode of classic Coronation Street from June 1993, the episde ended abruptly. I found this quite irritating. The episode showed Jim McDonald punching Richard Wilmore. I looked for the episode on Youtube because I was curious as to why they cut the end of the episode. I managed to find the episode, and now know why the ending was cut. This is all very well, but it is irritating. Perhaps in future, there should be a note at the end of the episode, stating that the content has been slightly edited. Let the viewers make up their own minds about what is appropriate material, rather than wrapping them up in cotton wool.

1970: The year that wasn't

A massive thank-you to Kaleidoscope for granting us access to their script archive and making this possible.

The summer of 1970 was an interesting time for Coronation Street. June Howson was settling in as producer and the traditional cast shake-up was underway; Irma Barlow was already back on our screens, Alan Howard was soon to become the third Mr. Elsie Tanner, Julie Goodyear would shortly begin her 25-year stint as Bet Lynch and the axe had fallen on most of the younger cast, namely Sandra and Bernard Butler and the somewhat lifeless Dickie and Audrey Fleming. But it was the sad passing of Arthur Leslie on 30th June that affected the programme the most. As well as a much-loved member of the cast, as Rovers landlord Jack Walker he played …

Martin Platt

I have been watching the classic episode of Corrie, and have come to the conclusion that Martin Platt was a bully and not a very likable character. He presurised Gail into keeping their baby, he presurised her into marrying him and he presurised her into purchasing the house in Coronation Street. He comes across as arrogant and unsympathetic - he didn't listen to anyone's concerns about Carmel. I wonder what Gail ever saw in him. But then again, Gail was always rather headstrung:)

What exactly does 'Underworld' do as a business?

Sorry if it seems a daft question, but I'm just curious as to how Corrie has Underworld running.

So obviously they design women's lingerie etc, but do they just sell them onto other retailers to then sell in their own shop?

Thanks

Councils

Dozens or hundreds of articles refer to Weatherfield's local council. Unless there is a contradictory reference I haven't seen, the council is still officially the Weatherfield Metropolitan Borough Council, which started life early in the series, in 1974. Its predecessor was the Weatherfield County Borough Council.

I have just checked undated red links to the ambiguous term Weatherfield Borough Council and confirmed that they were all to the current council, so I've created that page as a redirect, transforming a couple of dozen red links into workable article links.

To ease the workload of editors in the future, I have assumed that few if any edits will now want to create links to the old council, and I have therefore made "council" a redir…

Am I bothered?

All my life, can I say, all my life I have been raised on Coro. I live in NZ, where the theme song had me running out of the room from age five. Now I am regular watcher... well I haven't really given up (my mum's biggest story is, 'hey, I don't watch Coro any more, I watch Emmerdale!). I don't care... I like the bumped up, larger than life drama Coro has become. I adore the over-the-top theatrics of its main players and I enjoy how the soap is embracing every people on the fringe. However, for the first time since I was around 10, the series has me running from the room. Hannah (forget her name) is hideous. Who did her styling? I am sorry but Liz would be all over that milksop of a character you have put before us. I hate her hair, her te…

Ten years of Corriepedia

Yesterday was the website's tenth anniversary and I couldn't let the date pass without paying tribute to the hard work put in over the years by our team. How to do this? By going through each year systematically and explaining in painstaking detail why each one was the best yet, of course. That's how we roll in these parts.

Progress: The first four articles created were Coronation Street, Corriepedia, Coronation Street in 1960 and Ken Barlow, all of whose first edits simply read "Will fill this out soon". Episode 1 followed the next day, then Episode 2 and so on until 25th May when it was pointed out to me that going through them in order may not be the most practical idea. The f…
