Brian Armstrong

Brian Armstrong (born "Brian Stainton Armstrong" on 10th October 1933, died 24th February 2020) worked as a producer on Coronation Street for seven months from November 1971 to May 1972. He was educated at Heaton Grammar school and Wadham College, Oxford (where he gained an honours degree in English) and joined Granada Television in 1958 as an assistant transmission controller. In 1963 he became researcher and writer, working on The World Tomorrow in 1966 followed by three years on World in Action as well as Nice Time, Cinema and All Our Yesterdays. Before Coronation Street, he worked on The Sinners, and after it Raging Calm, Nightingale’s Boys and the Bafta award-winning Soldier and Me made use of his drama talents.

As a demonstration of Granada's diverse career paths that their employees enjoyed, he eventually went on to become Head of Comedy at Granada for ten years from 1974 during which time the station produced The Cuckoo Waltz, My Brother’s Keeper, Yanks Go Home, Devenish, Leave It to Charlie, Foxy Lady, Union Castle, Affairs of the Heart and Wood and Walters. He returned to drama producing Travelling Man and Game, Set & Match before finally producing What The Papers Say (with Daphne Oxenford as one of the readers) for two years from 1990, after which he retired from the company.
