Cilla worked at the newly refurbished PVC Factory in Coronation Street in May 1966. When Bet Lynch led Cilla into the Rovers for lunch to take away, landlady Annie Walker could barely disguise her contempt for the young women who Hilda Ogden described as "common as muck". Bet did most of the talking, telling the Walkers that they were the factory's skeleton staff and that thirty more women would be starting work there soon. After they had left, Annie bitterly asked Jack if the brewery had premises on a very small island.
