Clifford Willis was a wholesale bookseller who bought a rack of paperback romances into The Kabin on a sale or return basis as agreed with Rita Littlewood. Mavis Riley dealt with him as he explained to her that he would be back to restock in three to four weeks and that he'd included a few titles from their "Moonflower" list, basically stories of "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy finds girl - wedding bells." Mavis had written her own novel: Song of a Scarlet Summer, and asked his advice how to get it published. He told her to write to the publishers named on the books and that if she was successful she would make a nice little living out of it, in the same way that "Rosemary Tudor", the pseudonym of a woman who ran a sweet shop in Halifax had. He did tell her as a final piece of advice not to bank on it too much as it was a heart-breaking business in which many failed.
