Gone but not forgotten[]

Becky exit kylie

The exit of Becky McDonald attracted 11.4m viewers, Coronation Street's highest audience of the year

Production continued at Quay Street studios in what was intended to the final full year at the site. However, construction problems at the new set at MediaCityUK caused the move to be postponed to 2014 [1]. Phil Collinson and Kieran Roberts remained in their roles of producer and executive producer for a third and seventh year respectively. With this, Collinson became the longest-running producer since Jane Macnaught a decade earlier.

The midweek episode of Coronation Street moved back to 7.30pm on Wednesdays after three years on Thursdays at 8.30pm. The schedule changed occurred on 5th September, when ITV's contract to broadcast UEFA Champions League football ended [2].

Betty Williams died peacefully in her sleep in April, six months after the passing of actress Betty Driver. The news was broken to the residents by Gordon Clegg, who was recast with the original actor, Bill Kenwright, who last played the part in 1995. Kenwright was the only actor asked back for the occasion [3]. After the funeral, a photograph of Betty was hung on the wall in the Rovers as a tribute to Driver.

The same week saw the return of Nigel Pivaro as Terry Duckworth, in his first appearance alongside Chris Fountain's Tommy. Terry planned to open a lap-dancing club called Se7enth Hea7en next door to Nick's Bistro, but in typical fashion he scarpered with £9,000 of Jack's money, leaving Tommy and Tina McIntyre at the mercy of loan shark Rick Neelan. The climax of Terry's storyline was part of the now well-established Britain's Got Talent finals week, aired slightly earlier in May than usual. To date, this is Pivaro's final appearance in the programme.

Becky McDonald left Weatherfield in January when Katherine Kelly quit in order to concentrate on her personal life [4]. The character's exit occurred on the day her ex-husband Steve McDonald married Tracy Barlow. Shunned for causing Tracy to have a miscarriage by pushing her down the stairs, Becky let the wedding go ahead before exposing Tracy's allegations as false, then set off for a new life in Barbados. Appalled, Steve finished with Tracy and divided No.13 into two flats, moving in Beth Tinker, Craig and his rat Darryl to wind Tracy up. This marked Colson Smith's debut as a main cast member after appearing in two episodes uncredited in 2011, and cemented the Tinkers as one of the programme's core families. Two days after Becky's exit, Coronation Street won Best Serial Drama and Best Serial Drama Performance (for Katherine Kelly) at the National Television Awards, the first time it had ever won both in the same ceremony.

February saw the departure of Helen Flanagan as Rosie Webster after twelve years. Flanagan left the programme by mutual consent following difficulties recording the mini-series Just Rosie the year before caused by Flanagan's panic attacks. A month later, Amber Kalirai was also written out, her main storyline with Sophie Webster and Sian Powers having played out. Both characters left the Street to work in London.

Who killed Frank Foster?[]

Frank foster murder suspects

Which of these people murdered Frank Foster?

Carla Connor's sexual assault storyline from 2011 carried on into this year with Frank Foster's rape trial and her affair with Peter Barlow. Frank's acquittal led into a whodunit-style murder mystery in March with Sally Webster finding Frank dead on the floor of Underworld. As part of the publicity, ITV released an official suspect list consisting of Carla, Peter, Sally, Kevin Webster and Michelle Connor, but the culprit turned out to be another character entirely, namely Frank's mother Anne Foster.

Marriage drama followed for the Barlows, ending with Carla and Peter finally becoming a proper couple and Leanne returning to Nick Tilsley, with a Christmas Day wedding taking place later in the year.

In July, Carla's brother Rob Donovan was introduced, played by Marc Baylis. She had occasionally mentioned a brother called Darren, but Phil Collinson said in an interview that Carla had only one brother [5]. Rob and Darren had the same backstory, both being in prison during Carla's early years in the programme, so presumably they are the same character re-named. Rob debuted a week ahead of Carla and Peter's departure from Weatherfield, when Alison King and Chris Gascoyne took a five-month sabbatical from the programe. They returned in December.

Deirdre confronts wendy 2012

Deirdre has a showdown with Wendy Papadopoulos

Roberta Kerr made a return as Wendy Crozier (now Papadopoulos) after an absence of 22 years. This was a record gap for a female character played by the same actress, which stood until 2019. The storyline concerned Ken Barlow in his role as Bessie Street School chair of governors, re-kindling his friendship with board member Wendy, but this time staying faithful to Deirdre.

In terms of more recent characters, Lewis Archer was brought back two years after his well-received 2010 stint. Lewis renewed his relationship with Audrey Roberts, with viewers kept guessing as to whether he was truly a reformed character. Meanwhile, Pam Hobsworth made the last of her flying visits since she stopped being a regular, this time appearing without Bill Webster. Craig Charles returned to filming in the spring after shooting a season of Red Dwarf, with Lloyd Mullaney resuming his business partnership with Steve after a storyline in which the pair ran competing taxi firms.

Three changes of heads took place. Sol Heras took over the part of Ryan Connor from Ben Thompson, as Ryan was kicked out of university and returned to Weatherfield a bad lad and coke addict. Ava and Isla McCulloch were replaced as Hope Stape by Faith and Nicole Holt, though the new actors would not be seen in the part until the following January. Liam Connor, currently played by Ollie and Elliott Barnett, was recast with a single actor, Charlie Wrenshall.

Stella Price and Karl Munro became the Rovers' owners when they bought the pub in January after Stella had run it as manager for six months. In September, Stella's acerbic mother Gloria was introduced, played by Sue Johnston. Known for her roles in Brookside and The Royle Family, Johnston had appeared earlier in Coronation Street in a prominent role as Mrs Chadwick in 1982. Other famous faces to feature in the programme in 2012 include Sir Derek Jacobi, stage actor and Coronation Street fan who appeared as an extra in the background of the Rovers in Episode 7873, and Hollywood actor Robert Vaughn, who appeared in 13 episodes as Sylvia Goodwin's American boyfriend Milton Fanshaw. In the summer, Stephanie Cole fell ill and Sylvia was written out temporarily, going to stay with Milton in Palm Springs for six months. Hayley Cropper was also absent for three months in the same period while Julie Hesmondhalgh appeared in a play at the Royal Exchange Theatre.

A second attempt was made to create a family for Lloyd Mullaney with the introduction of Mandy Kamara, an old flame of his who had secretly given birth to his daughter, the now grown-up Jenna. The Kamaras were the first black family in Coronation Street history when the criteria is restricted to regular characters. The last new character was Ruby Soames, daughter of Kirsty Soames and Tyrone Dobbs. Grace Hanrahan and Macy Alabi shared the part of Ruby until February 2013, when Alabi carried on in the role by herself. Ruby was born in the midst of the Kirsty/Tyrone domestic abuse storyline, which won Coronation Street the Best Storyline award at the British Soap Awards in 2013.

Street of Dreams

Street of Dreams' closed after two performances, with legal action against the production companies following

The next in the procession of internet spin-offs was released on the ITV website on 11th May. This was a stand-alone mini-episode entitled Where's Kylie?, showing how Kylie Platt came to be working at Britney's lap-dancing bar where David Platt and Nick Tilsley found her in the parent show the following week.

A Coronation Street sketch was featured on ITV's second annual Text Santa fundraising evening on 21st December. The story was loosely based on Charles Dickens' classic novel A Christmas Carol, with Norris Cole filling the Ebenezer Scrooge role and dead Coronation Street characters appearing in ghostly form, specifically Mike Baldwin, Maxine Peacock, Derek Wilton and Vera Duckworth, all played by their original actors. The sketch was produced by Kate Oates, then the programme's assistant producer.

Street of Dreams was a musical based on Coronation Street, produced by Reckless Entertainment and Street of Dreams Ltd. The music was composed by Trisha Ward, based on her album Coronation Street - Rogues, Angels, Heroes and Fools, a 2010 release. The stage play was also planned to tie in with the 50th anniversary, but it was delayed multiple times before it opened at Manchester M.E.N. Arena on 9th May 2012. The play's narrative was presented by Paul O'Grady who took the audience through fifty years of the programme’s storylines by the medium of song and dance presented by a 36-strong cast, including Kym Marsh, Katy Cavanagh, Julie Goodyear, Kevin Kennedy and Brian Capron. After just two performances and mixed reviews, the production closed down, with producers announcing that it was being re-worked. In November, the production companies went into administration amidst legal action by O’Grady’s management company, BM Creative Management Ltd.

Viewing figures[]

2012 ratings

Ratings chart for the year

2012 was the first year since 2006 in which every month was down compared with the previous year. The average was 8.22 million viewers, 566k lower than 2011 and the lowest up to this point. The biggest drops were in January and June, of 1.1 and 1.5m viewers respectively.

At 11.43 million viewers, the highest-rated episode of the year was Episode 7786 on 23rd January, which was Becky McDonald's exit episode. This was the last time Coronation Street topped 11 million viewers. In another sign of the downward trend in audience numbers, eight episodes had an audience of over ten million viewers in 2012, compared with 33 in 2011.

Chart placings were on the same level as 2011, with ten episodes reaching number one - an increase of one - and three episodes charting outside the top twenty.
