DS Morrison arrested David and Kylie Platt for the murder of Callum Logan. Kylie actually was the killer, having clubbed the drug dealer across the back of his head in 8 Coronation Street the previous September when he was attacking her sister-in-law Sarah. The body was hidden in an manhole beneath a converted annex of the house and lay there undiscovered for eight months until an accident with Webster's Autocentre tow truck revealed its location.
In the intervening period, David had evaded all questions about the missing man from his friends and family, chief among them Gemma Winter, who started to harbour suspicions. When the body was found, she reported David and Kylie to DS Kerr as the murderers. As the body had been found under their house, it didn't take much for her to send her officers out to arrest the suspects and bring them in to Weatherfield Police Station for questioning. Morrison found David and Kylie explaining to Kylie's son Max Turner that his father was dead. His accompanying woman police officer took care of Max while the adults were taken away.
Arriving at the station, David found that Sarah and their mother Gail Rodwell had also been arrested. Morrison questioned Sarah who had coped least well with the stress of the on-going situation but managed to retain her composure when the officer suggested that David had killed Callum to protect her from the violent gangster.
He then questioned Kylie who claimed Callum had left the house alive and that anyone could have entered the house, killed the man and secreted the body. She further claimed that the duvet cover that the body was found in had been used as a dust sheet by the builders working on the annex and anyone also had access to that.
To divert attention away from himself, David claimed that another victim of Callum, Jason Grimshaw, was the killer. In turn, to protect him and his old love Sarah, his brother Todd Grimshaw claimed that the recently deceased Tony Stewart was the killer. When the murder weapon was found in Tony's old tool bag, the case was closed and the Platt family declared innocent.
