Reginald Marsh played Dave Smith in 110 episodes of Coronation Street from 1962 to 1976. The character first appeared in 1962 and returned in 1966. Until 1971, the character made sporadic appearances as required by storylines, generally appearing for a few weeks each year. Marsh returned as Dave for four episodes in 1976, which marked the character's final appearances.
