Dr Summers performed tests on Alf Roberts when he decided to stand for council in 1991. Audrey booked the appointment with Summers hoping that she would advise Alf not to stand for the sake of his health; his defeat by Deirdre Barlow in the 1987 election had brought on a heart attack. In the event, Alf's blood pressure was normal and Summers gave him the all-clear, though she was concerned about his weight which Alf attributed to coming from a thick-set family and eating a big meal before coming in, not knowing that Audrey had made the appointment until the last minute.

When reporting back to Audrey, Alf made out that he'd been given a clean bill of health, telling Audrey that Dr Summers had prescribed wifely support, plenty of hot dinners and no aggravation. This had the desired effect of making Audrey give up her fight and let Alf on with his campaign.
