Eddie also began dating teenager Lucille Hewitt during that month and took her out but soon Eddie would start avoiding her. This upset Lucille and her father Harry Hewitt told Len to keep Eddie occupied so he would stop spending time with Lucille. Eddie then started dating Joyce, despite her being with Len. Eddie started to avoid his boss, and when questioned, Eddie said he had no idea that Joyce had stood him up. A few days later, Joyce left Eddie to go to work for Laurie Frazer at the Viaduct Sporting Club
After temporarily taking on Martha Longhurst's cleaning job in April, Minnie Caldwell fell through through the bannisters at the club as she was cleaning the stairs and was taken to hospital where she was diagnosed with a torn ligament. After convalescing with Ena Sharples, Minnie decided to take legal action. It was established that the fault lay with Len who, with no orders or money coming in, was forced to sack Eddie and Jerry.
