Len takes Jerry Booth on as apprentice, his old place having come to an end with the death of Joe White, his previous boss. Minnie asks Swindley to come round to her house to ask his advice. Frank returns from holiday to the news of Ken and Val's engagement. Elsie is depressed. Val collects her engagement ring. Len finds out that Jerry is a cyclist with the Weatherfield Harriers. Ken sells his scooter to put towards the wedding. He decides to put a deposit down on a new semi-detached. Frank is hurt at the thought they'll move away. Ena and Martha gossip about how lonely he'll be. Minnie doesn't like her house anymore after the death of her mother and wants to move into No.5, partially because it has an indoor toilet. Swindley promises to ask the landlord for her. Val thinks they should stay with Frank but Ken refuses to remain in No.3. They think about buying No.9 as Val could start a hairdressing business in the front room. Sheila and Doreen get excited at the thought of Len's new lad, thinking he must be tall, dark and handsome. They are initially disappointed when they see Jerry in his cycling shorts. Elsie promises to write to Linda and Ivan about the house.
