Mike tells Deirdre that Emily warned him off. When questioned, Emily tells Deirdre that she has her best interests at heart and points out that Ken is reliable. Gordon Lewis stops Bet from smoking behind the bar. Deirdre tells Ken that he's been unreliable with her in the past and she will not marry him. They are over. Ken tells Mike the field is clear for him and asks him not to hurt Deirdre. Gordon throws a hotpot supper but he sees Fred helping himself to a short and confronts him. Fred argues that it's a perk of the job. Fred threatens to hit him when Gordon accuses him of stealing. Gordon suspends him. Wally Randle takes Elsie to the Rovers. Bet and Betty walk out of the Rovers when they hear about Fred's suspension. Gordon phones old friends Carole Fairbanks and Diane Hawkins to replace them.
