Hilda determines to find out why the police want to see Annie and leaves the Rovers unattended to look for her. As Elsie panics about the police being in the Street, Len makes her see that no one will care what she's been up to - she's just a tart. He can't believe he ever wanted to marry her. Emily has difficulty getting an assistant. The police, Det Sergeant Sowman and Det Constable Lucas, tell Annie they're trying to trace the woman from the "Fox and Hounds" who told the barmaid that the Walkers recommended the pub to her. Emily agrees to taking Sandra on at Gamma Garments if Lionel approves. Elsie breaks down and smashes a window. Annie tries to protect Elsie but eventually gives her name to the police. Elsie admits her troubles to Dennis. The police return Elsie's gloves, telling her that she'll have to appear at the inquest. Elsie doesn't want to see his wife and worries about her reputation. Hilda watches the scene through the broken window and spreads the word. Minnie decides to have a birthday party. Sandra says 'yes' to the job, without asking Lionel. Dennis rows with Annie for telling the police about Elsie.
