Plot[]
Part One: Dennis finds Hilda helping out in the corner shop while Irma is out clothes shopping. He tells Hilda he's going to play dirty to get rid of the Cooks. Stanley helps Len compose a closed question for the council and is contemptuous of his father dabbling in local politics. Father and son help Minnie when she locks herself out. Albert tells Stan he can't understand Stanley's attitude to Len and is advised to keep his thoughts to himself. Prompted by Dennis, Val praises Arthur's muscle strength when he opens a supposedly tightly closed jar for her. Steve calls into the Rovers on his way to meet Gregg in Manchester. He tells Hilda and Annie to drop in on Elsie any time they like and they decide to go that afternoon to ogle at the flat. Val drops a hint that she needs a babysitter and Arthur quickly volunteers. Mrs Cook worries when Dennis drops hints that Val's after her son.
Part Two: Elsie is taken aback when her old neighbours call on her unexpectedly. Behind Elsie's back, her visitors criticise the decor. Arthur is chatting with Val when Albert comes round in haste as their mum has angrily summoned him back but Arthur refuses. Albert also hides out in No.9 to escape their mother's wrath. Stan catches Stanley using Len's old carpenter's plane and ruining its blade. He's rude to Stan when he remonstrates with him. When Len returns, Stanley tells him it wasn't him who broke it, so Len blames Stan. Annie and Hilda let slip to Elsie that Steve was in the Rovers and he's on a half-day without telling her. They're amused to meet Elsie's charming bachelor neighbour, Philip Laker and think he's paying court to her. Mrs Cook is angry to find her boys in No.9 and orders them away from Val who she accuses of being a deadly flirt. Dennis is delighted that the old woman is rattled. Stan tells Albert about his run-in with Len. Elsie's visitors leave. Elsie rings Burtonwood and finds Steve isn't at work. When he returns late, she explodes at him for lying to her.
