Plot[]
Part One: Emily wears a cardigan, a heavy coat and flat shoes to visit Frank Starkie's farm in Clitheroe. Irma thinks it's inappropriate for a date. She changes into a more glamorous outfit when David compliments her attire as "sensible". Ena sets off for the florist's shop to find out who's been going to Alfred's grave. She stops Minnie from coming with her in case she doesn't like the answer. Dennis tells Val exactly how he likes his cooking done but Ken takes offence to a note he leaves for his wife and informs him that Val won't be doing any more cooking for him from now on. A disapproving Elsie realises what's been going on and reminds her son that he still owes the window cleaner his money. A bored Elsie has to wear a hideous spider pin on her collar on a visit to Burtonwood as it was a gift from Steve's mother Emmeline Tanner. Val envies Irma's pregnancy and wants her own baby. At the farm, Emily works the gates for Frank and the mud ruins her heels. Minnie and Albert sulk that Ena has excluded them from her investigation. She returns, having found out from the girl in the flower shop that a man bought the blooms. She's also found an extra £100 in her bank account.
Part Two: Emily discovers she's frightened of cows. Ken refuses to have any more children, telling David he's had his fill of changing nappies. Emily is alarmed when Frank picks out a live chicken for their dinner. When Ken suggests Val takes a holiday instead, she locks him out in the cold yard without his jacket on. Elsie visits Steve's office, meeting sergeant Russ Parks. Despite being extremely busy, Steve takes her out for a meal. Ken freezes in the yard. Minnie thinks Ena should just accept the money, but she vehemently disagrees. Trying to close up, Irma stops Ken from using the corner shop to warm up in support of her friend. A tired Emily returns, having finished with Frank as they're from different worlds. She looks forward to her next man. Steve gets a telegram telling him that his mother is flying over.
