Plot[]

Part One: Gail tries to talk Joe out of his crazy idea but he's adamant it's the only way out of his predicament. He explains that he will use the dinghy to get to shore and leave her to ring the police and report him missing. The searchers have still not found Peter. Gail's horrified by the madness of everything that Joe is proposing and is about to ring the police, but Joe stops her, determined to carry out his plan. Peter turns up at George and Eve's house, drunk and demanding to see Simon. George is furious and sends him packing in front of the upset little boy. Joe makes his way in the darkness to the boat and tries to scramble on board. Gail pulls him back and they row on the edge of the lake. Unbeknown to them, Mark and Jane see their row as they're setting off in their car. Joe pushes Gail back but falls and sprains his wrist. He manages to break free from her and sets off in the boat leaving Gail sobbing on the jetty.

Part Two: Alone in the cottage, Gail tries to phone Joe but he doesn't answer. Peter calls in the Rovers drunk and Michelle refuses to serve him. Ciaran and Jason stop him helping himself. Tina can't raise her father on the phone. On the boat, he swigs back Dutch courage and, with his arm hurting, loses his grip on the dinghy which floats away. George drives to Coronation Street and tells Ken and Leanne about Peter's visit. Leanne has also heard about the incident in the Rovers. Ciaran finds Peter in the bookies. Peter insists they share a few beers before he faces the music. Ken, Deirdre, Leanne and a shocked George discuss Peter's drink problem. George offers to pay for rehab. Peter lies to Ciaran that he's not going to have more than his two beers but opens the whisky as soon as his friend departs. Joe tries to retrieve the dinghy. The boom swings round and knocks him into the icy water without a lifejacket. Tina's worried about Joe. Jason is angry on the way he's left her in the lurch. Joe manages to reach the boat, but his hurt arm means he can't pull himself onboard. He slips beneath the water and drowns as Gail sobs by the pitch-black lakeside.
