Plot[]
Part One: Lucille suggests to Dennis that they have a party in No.11 to celebrate Christmas but he refuses. John remains sullen with Val when she tries to chat to him. Ken has to cancel his lesson as he has to provide teacher cover. He admits to Val that he's getting nowhere with John after half a dozen lessons. Len and Stan refuse to take part in Albert's tug-of-war. Elsie returns from Birmingham. She tells Len that everything is fine, but he realises that she hasn't yet put in appearance at home yet. An angry Albert moans to Ena about people's lack of commitment nowadays. Lucille brings two good-looking girlfriends, Caroline and Tracy, into the Rovers, admitting to Annie that they're bait to persuade Dennis to have a party. The ruse works and he quickly agrees to the party once the girls start flattering him. Ken can't get John at all enthusiastic about his studies when he sets him an essay. Elsie admits to Val that she's scared of returning home.
Part Two: Len and Stan work on reconditioning a rocking horse for an orphanage as a Christmas present. Ena tries to shame them into agreeing to the tug-of-war. Elsie tries to put on a happy front with Steve. He sees through it and assures her that she's welcome home. David makes a delivery to No.9 and John recognises him as a former professional footballer. John sadly admits that his dad won't let him play and makes him stick to his books. Ken sees that David has got through to him but still gets angry at the boy's slow essay writing and shouts at him for being bone idle. Val gets her husband to admit he went too far. At Ena's request, Annie also tries to shame Len and Stan about the tug-of-war. Elsie suggests to Steve that they go to the Roebuck Inn to revitalise their love for one another. He again tells her they're fine with each other. Albert admits he's got a £1 on the tug-of-war which he now stands to lose. Len agrees to take part. Ken returns from the Potters from where John had disappeared, leaving a suicide note.
