Plot[]

Part One: The demolishers move into the street and put signs up outside the Glad Tidings Mission Hall. Miklos promises a saddened Minnie he'll make it as painless as possible for Ena. Hilda shows George the cigarette tip she found and asserts that Stan has another woman. George points out that the cigarette end has no lipstick and thinks she's being fanciful. Dennis confesses to Jenny that he didn't fight Maurice Rowe. She admits she's always known and thinks he's clever for using blackmail instead. He tries to get her to admit why she's staying in Weatherfield and not returning to London. Saying she values her freedom, she suddenly declares she's visiting a friend in Liverpool. Mr Ironfield from the council visits Ena, pushing her for an answer as to where she wants to live after the demolition - with a friend, in a council flat or at the Sunshine Villas Old Folks Home. She declines to give him an answer, even though the removal van will be calling tomorrow morning. Dennis passionately kisses Jenny, and she realises that he really fancies her.

Part Two: Stan winds up Jimmy Gibson, saying the Rovers has a fanciable blonde barmaid called Annie and the landlord Jack is an ex-rugby player. Hilda asks Stan about the cigarette and he lies that David gave it to him. Miklos charms Annie, but Jimmy drops Stan in it when he repeats what he was told and is embarrassed when he discovers just who Annie is. David denies giving Stan tipped cigarettes when Hilda questions him. Irma is bored and wants a night out. She has to pretend that David is the jealous type when Albert offers to take her out. Knowing that Jerry is going skating, David asks him to take his wife with him. Hilda tells George she can't see him any more as they both have too much to lose. She agrees to let Mabel stay with Winnie and they say their goodbyes. Ena and Minnie remember air raids in the mission. Taking Jerry into Jenny's bedroom to fix a window sash, Dennis discovers she has packed up and left.

Notable dialogue[]

Annie Walker: "If Hollywood had ever stumbled across Annie Walker, Coronation Street might not have been able to contain her."

---

Ena Sharples (remembering air raids): "It always seemed to me that if the mission hall was still standing when we come out, everthing wasn't lost. It's funny in't it? All them German bombs and not one of them touched it, and it's coming down tomorrow to two fellahs with a big metal ball on a chain."
