Plot[]
Part One: Decorator Harold Eaton begins work on the Rovers. Annie insists his paint isn't the colour she chose and finds that Albert agrees with her. Jerry receives daily scented letters from Myra. Len warns him that he needs to be careful as he's being softened up. Val worries as there are four letters from Elsie for Dennis and no one knows where he is in London. Emily tells her and Irma that she and Miklos have been on a second date. Ena seeks out Ken, admitting that she's finding life with Minnie and Bobby difficult. At the same time, Minnie is complaining about her friend to Jerry at Jackson's Chip Shop. Myra seeks him out there and flaunts her new friendship with him in front of Minnie, but he sees through her and leaves hurriedly. Minnie counsels her not to drive a man too much. Annie annoys Irma, bragging about the decorating and their new beer pumps, hinting that the corner shop is dingy. Annie is horrified to discover from Miklos that the factory is to be demolished tomorrow, just when the Rovers is being given its new lick of paint.
Part Two: Annie insists to Miklos, and Len in his role of councillor, that the demolition must be postponed until after her decorating is over but they refuse. She storms round to the council offices to have it out with them. Minnie tells Ena about Myra following Jerry. Val also warns Jerry to be careful with Myra and he admits he found her behaviour in Jackson's puzzling and embarrassing. Miklos admits to Emily that he's worried about the demolition because the factory is so old and feels guilty that his work is upsetting the residents. Emily assures him that progress is always needed. Annie returns in high dudgeon and insists that Harold continues his work. Myra calls on Jerry at 15 Mawdsley Street late at night and begs him to tell her that he loves her. She tells him that she is lonely and frightened and begs to stay the night, just as Len walks in. Jerry insists they can't cast her out in her state.
