Plot[]
Part One: Dickie asks for some money from Audrey, having spent all his on drinks with Ray. He doesn't like the thought of money being tight until he finishes his apprenticeship in two years. Val bitterly regrets sending the letter, especially after Ena helped so much with the Frank Riley affair. She explains to Ken that she sent it months before after the twins had a stomach bug and she was deprived of sleep for two days, only for Ena to begin playing early in the morning. She begs Ken to intercede. Minnie worries that she's heard no word from Les about her buns. Annie doesn't look refreshed after a night's sleep. Dickie tries to give 10/- to Ray, saying he didn't pay his fair share last night, but he refuses to take it. He warns Dickie that he won't be awash with money when his apprenticeship ends. Ena is amazed to discover from Ken that it was Val and demands that he fetch his wife. Minnie is also sent to fetch Len. As the conference begins in Ena's flat, Hilda is agog to know what's going on.
Part Two: Len acts as "judge" as Val and Ena meet. Val is genuine in her apologises but Ena assures her that she owes her nothing. The two women agree that Ena can play from 9.30 to 11.30am, and 6.00 to 8.00pm. Minnie calls at the corner shop but leaves almost straight away when Maggie proffers no thanks. In the Rovers, Ena and Len are surprised when Annie doesn't boast about her dinner speech. After he's closed up for the night, Jack tells Annie he knows what happened. She breaks down and confesses she wandered around and then spent the night in the Rex Cinema, feeling like a silly old woman. She's persuaded to spend a couple of days with a relative. Minnie tells Maggie what she did and is told that Les has discharged himself and has gone to work at his brother's furniture factory near Stafford. Val writes to the council, withdrawing her objections. Audrey is upset when Dickie insists he's going to give up his apprenticeship to get a labouring job so that they can have money. She tries to argue but he's adamant that his mind's made up.
