Plot[]
Part One: Len didn't arrive home last night, and Ray has to admit to Jack that he doesn't know where he is, and he's given up caring. Alice Pickins turns up at No.3, having received Audrey 's note and looking for her "dew drop" i.e. Albert. Audrey invites the delighted widow to tea that evening. Having confiscated the twins' beach ball, Effie tells Val to keep Susan and Peter in order as they're cheeky and bother her. Val sees that behind her manner lies something else. Ray does one job and then drinks in the Rovers. A worried Val goes to see Jack, worried about Effie, and asks him to have a word with her. Rey returns to the yard and finds Len there. He upbraids an astonished Ray for being late back from lunch and suggests they get some work done.
Part Two: Jack visits Effie under the pretext of having found some gloves in the snug. He broaches the suspect of what's bothering her and after some pressure she admits to her financial problems. He offers to lend her some money, but she refuses. An angry Ray demands to know from Len where he's been but his chipper boss refuses to give anything away. Len tells him he didn't like the sort of pressure and shoddy work that Ronald Wilde made him do and the yard is going back to its old ways and craftsmanship. Ray denigrates his lack of ambition. Albert is appalled to discover Alice is expected, but before he can escape, she turns up. Len will only tell Val that he needed desperately to get away after the inquest, so he did just that. He finds out that Elsie is away with Dave Smith and admits he still has feelings for her. Albert isn't happy to find out that Alice has told Audrey all the stories about his disreputable past. He's further horrified when he realises she has marriage in mind and escapes to the Rovers. Dickie, Ray and Val laugh at his predicament, especially when Alice follows him and says he wants his legs slapping for running away from her.
