Episode 856 (5th March 1969)

Plot[]

Part One: The Rovers receives a postcard from Minnie about her and Ena's stay in Lytham St Annes. Lucille looks over wedding dresses with Audrey. She views her attempt to elope with Gordon as a mistake as she can now have a proper white wedding. Annie looks forward to having Maggie and Gordon round to tea. Stan offers to do Elsie's windows for free for her birthday, but she correctly guesses that he wants to borrow some money. Emily collects for a present for Elsie while Jack and Annie prepare for a surprise party with Val's help. Len makes Stan hand over the 2/6 he borrowed towards the collection. Reverend James asks Maggie if she knows of anyone in need and asks if Gordon intends to marry in his church. She avoids answering. He gets into a debate about church-going with Dickie and invites him and Audrey round later to continue their chat. Gordon has to prevent an impatient Maggie from going to the Rovers and tell them herself that the wedding is off. He ventures in and finds that Lucille is out shopping. The vicar asks a reluctant Elsie if she's like to help him organise a woman's group. Len lures Elsie to the Rovers. Hilda is outraged to see the vicar drinking in the pub. Elsie is downcast to find the party organised for her.

Part Two: Maggie erupts in anger at Gordon's lack of action. Hilda is annoyed at the way the men congregate round Elsie at the party. Elsie's present is an alarm clock. Jack guesses Gordon doesn't want to marry when he sees that he looks despondent and drinks whiskey. Dickie agrees to lead a debating society for Reverend James. Jack goes to speak to Lucille in her bedroom and finds her kitted out in her wedding dress. He's alarmed when she admits that she pushed Gordon into agreeing to the date of the wedding. Elsie admits to Val that she's upset that Len didn't get her a present. Jack calls to see Maggie and she guesses from his face that he knows, but finds out that Lucille is still in the dark. Annie looks forward to her tea with the Cleggs and the wedding. Gordon arrives to see his bride-to-be.
