Eric Summers was an acquaintance of Rita Fairclough and also a patron at the Gatsby Club where she used to sing. In June 1978, Rita called him to help get her husband Len out of a financial quandary. Summers turned out to be a loan shark, wanting to charge an extortionate interest rate.
