Ernie was one of the lorry drivers in Jim's Cafe. Flirting, like all of them, with Gail Tilsley, he mentioned to her that Elsie Tanner was one of many women that Dan Johnson had. Gail, afraid that Elsie was being taken for a mug, mentioned this to her and she was suitably cool when Dan called into the cafe. Dan picked up the vibe and Ernie mentioned that he’d been talking to Gail. When Elsie confronted Dan, he told her that Ernie had a very big mouth and that one day he would find it full of somebody’s knuckles.
