Flick Khan studied at Manchester Polytechnic beginning in October 1989. Flick stayed in the student halls and was friends with Jenny Bradley, providing a supporting role to her in the wake of Alan Bradley's death. In February 1990, Flick alerted Rita Fairclough when Jenny locked herself in her dorm room. Rita soon arrived and talked Jenny round.
A short time later, Flick and Jenny accepted Rita's offer of lodgings at 7 Coronation Street as Rita was about to move into No.10a above the new Kabin. They were soon joined by Flick's friend Rodney Whitworth, who Flick let sleep on the sofa as he'd been kicked out of his digs. Although opposed to the idea at first, Jenny suddenly changed her mind, leading Flick to think she fancied him. When the girls realised that neither of them fancied him, they decided they were getting nothing out of him being there and asked him to leave. He was seen off by Mark Casey.
Mark had a crush on Flick and after dealing with Rod, he started to pursue her, much to her annoyance. He badgered her into accepting a date, and then surprised her with the gift of a gold necklace. Flick still had no romantic feelings for Mark and gave the necklace to a charity shop. She was shocked when he then asked for the necklace back, as he was in trouble with Kevin Webster for appropriating the necklace on finding it on the garage floor. Mark had to buy it back from the charity shop.
When term finished for summer, Flick and Jenny got jobs in a sweet factory. They were sacked in July, whereupon they decided to go to France for a holiday. Shortly after this, Flick's parents forced her to take in her sister Joanne for a few weeks while they were away. Joanne proved to be a handful, attracting the attentions of Steve and Andy, with Steve and Joanne falling for each other. Flick and Liz tried to keep them apart at first, but relented later as Joanne would be leaving soon, however when their parents came back home, Joanne and Steve drove off on Jim McDonald's motorbike rather than be separated. Flick covered for Joanne with their parents as long as she could but Liz phoned the police as she was worried about Steve. Joanne hitchhiker her way home from the Lake District by herself and returned to her parents, allowing Flick and Jenny to go to France as planned.
