The Counter Clerk worked at a Weatherfield betting shop in 1990. When Jack Duckworth got the mistaken impression that Des Barnes was giving him tips, he put bets on at the clerk's establishment and, by coincidence, the horses he backed came in. On one occasion, Jack was delayed getting to the shop as Alec Gilroy had given him jobs to do at the Rovers, and so by the time he arrived there the race had already finished. The clerk was amused when Jack complained that there were two minutes left by his watch, suggesting that he could ring and get them to run the race again for him.

Having missed out, Jack put more money on the next horse, "Three Lemons", as did Don Brennan and Mark Casey. However, the horse came in last, leading Don to joke that the men themselves were the three lemons.
