Plot[]

Part One: Lucille denies she's seeing Ray but Ena knows she's lying, having seen them out together. Ray thinks Ena is just a busybody and admits to taking the £5. When Ena threatens to report him to the police, Lucille knows she means it and agrees to play nice in exchange for her silence. David refuses to let Dennis pay by cheque. Elsie assures Ken that she didn't tell Val about Jackie Marsh but he thinks he should have done so himself. She tells him to only fetch Val back from Glasgow if he loves her enough not to cheat again. Dennis worries that he's backing a loser with Jed. Jim's annoyed that Elsie never goes out when he wants. Len sticks up for Elsie. Dennis is sacked from the novelty firm.

Part Two: Lucille continues to see Ray but worries that Ena will write to Harry. Dennis can't bear to tell Elsie he's lost his job. Jim and Elsie go out for St Patrick's Day. She's furious when he takes her to rough pub The Eagle and the Child to show her off to his rugby mates, who make lewd comments about her. Decamping to the Rovers, she cries off from the evening with a headache. Ken considers part-exchanging his scooter when Len puts him onto a mate selling cheap cars. Elsie is further annoyed when Jim chats to an old flame, Beryl Holgate, at the Rovers and introduces her as an afterthought. She heads home when he tries to make up a foursome with Len. Their argument continues there, with Elsie telling Jim she won't be treated like one of his tarts. When she becomes hysterical he hits her. Len arrives as Jim leaves and, realising what's happened, confronts Jim in the Rovers, provoking him into a fight by knocking his pint over. Jim responds by beating Len to the floor. Elsie arrives in time to witness it.
