Maurice was a junior sales assistant at Greenwoods Suits. When Alf Roberts purchased a new coat there in May 1988, Maurice was working on the till and scanned Alf's credit card while a sales assistant cut the tags on the coat. Alf was in the middle of checking his new silhouette in the mirror when Maurice informed the assistant that the card was over the limit. The assistant's tone turned far less courteous as he made Alf remove the coat and cut the credit card up, telling him it was "not a bloody magic wand". Hiding his embarrassment, an angry Alf withdrew his custom from the shop.
