George Groves and his wife Celia were the proprietors of Bide a Wee Guest House in Cartmel where Rita Sullivan and Mavis Wilton stayed in September 1997 with the intention of buying the property. Mavis soaked up the scenery whilst Rita found much to fault as the pair shared a room in the busy establishment.
The final straw came when Mrs Groves thought that Rita and Mavis were lesbians and Rita told Mavis that she couldn't go ahead with buying the guest house as she missed the city too much.
