John Barrett (born "Jack Elvyn Barrett" on 18th February 1910 in Rochdale, died 22nd May 1983 in Walton-on-the-Hill, Surrey) appeared on Coronation Street in two roles: firstly as Mr Stark in May 1961 and he returned to the programme between October and November 1980 as First World War veteran Monty Shawcross.

Born as "Jack Elvyn Barrett", he started out as an Assistant Stage Manager in repertory theatre before beginning his acting career in 1954. As well has having a long association with the Royal Court Theatre in the 1960s, Barrett's TV and film appearances spanned twenty-five years.

With over one hundred TV and film credits to his name, some of the better-known include roles in Quatermass and the Pit, Saturday Playhouse, Maigret, BBC Sunday-Night Play, The Saint, Nearest and Dearest, The Dustbinmen, Jackanory, Dixon of Dock Green, The Liver Birds, Clochemerle, Z Cars, Robin's Nest, The Cuckoo Waltz, Porridge, All Creatures Great and Small, The French Lieutenant's Woman and Objects of Affection.

On stage, he appeared in productions of Saved, The Changing Room, Lloyd George Knew My Father, Cromwell, The Cherry Orchard, Lark Rise and Restoration.
