Production

Rebuilding

William Roache and Michelle Keegan kick off construction of Coronation Street's new home

Phil Collinson remained as producer for a second year, while Kieran Roberts completed a sixth year as executive producer.

Planning permission for the new studios at MediaCityUK was approved by Trafford Council in February [1]. Building work then commenced in September, with completion expected in spring 2013. Actors William Roache and Michelle Keegan took part in a ceremony to mark the start of construction [2].

The current outdoor set also saw some cosmetic changes as the Corner Shop and The Kabin were rebuilt following the tram crash. Due to the logistics of shooting the live episode in between later ones, it wasn't until February that the affected buildings were seen properly and the shops re-opened. The flats above and the viaduct were also restored, with the new bricks used to differentiate the old and rebuilt parts. In April, The Joinery was re-christened Nick's Bistro, a wine bar and restaurant, which became a permanent addition to the set.

The fallout from the tram crash continued in the early months of the year. Claire Peacock, along with Joshua and Freddie, left the Street in January to go on the run in France after Claire was exposed as Tracy Barlow's attacker in an end-of-year whodunit. Elliott & Son butchers - closed down after Ashley's death - remained empty and unsold until 2014.

Hope Stape, born during the crash, was finally cast in March after several months being "played" by a prosthetic baby due to her premature birth. Harriet Atkins and Sadie Pilbury shared the role until October when twins Ava and Isla McCulloch took over the part. Paul Kershaw, one of the fire crew involved, returned to the Street to free Eileen Grimshaw when she got her head trapped between the railings above the factory. Played by Tony Hirst, Paul was a regular for the next two years.

Although the Websters' divorce was a major storyline in 2011 in the wake of Molly Dobbs's death and Kevin gaining custody of Jack, Bill Webster and Pam Hobsworth's appearances continued to drop off. Seen briefly at Sophie Webster and Sian Powers's ill-fated wedding in December, Bill did not appear again, while Pam returned for a further three episodes in 2012. When last seen together, the characters had recently got engaged.

The one-year anniversary of the disaster was marked by a memorial service at the crash site, organised by Emily Bishop. The pressures of giving a speech at the event was one of the challenges faced by Peter Barlow in a special episode chronicling a day in the life of the recovering alcoholic. Chris Gascoyne appeared in every scene of the episode, which ended with Peter again falling off the wagon.

Changes at the Rovers

Following her absence over the 50th anniversary, Beverley Callard was back on set in January. Callard had announced in October that she would be leaving the programme to focus on new challenges and her four-week comeback was designed as a send-off for her character Liz McDonald. The storyline centred around Liz and Jim's failed bid to buy the Rovers Return from a debt-ridden Steve. Out of desperation, Jim attempted to raise the cash by robbing a building society, only to be caught and sent to prison. In her final appearance, Liz told Jim that she would wait for him and left the Street in a midnight flit.

Another week of post-watershed episodes sandwiched between the Britain's Got Talent finals was aired across May and June, this time without interruption. One of the main story strands was the climax of Steve and Becky McDonald's feud with Tracy, and the destruction of the McDonalds' marriage, thus sowing the seeds for Katherine Kelly's own departure from the series the following January.

Stella Price and Karl Munro are Coronation Street's new power couple

Liz's replacement as Rovers landlady was installed the following week. Ex-EastEnders actress Michelle Collins played Stella Price, later revealed to be Leanne Battersby's biological mother. Stella became the Rovers' live-in manager and licensee - the first time the pub had ever been entrusted to a newcomer - with Steve retaining ownership of the boozer. Moving in with her were partner Karl Munro and 23-year-old-daughter Eva Price, played by John Michie and Catherine Tyldesley respectively.

Betty Driver was rushed to hospital with pneumonia on 11th May. Eleven days later, the recuperating actress celebrated her 91st birthday there and told The Mirror that she was looking forward to getting back to work [3]. In the autumn, Driver was treated for a chest infection and on 15th October she passed away, without ever returning to filming. Betty's final scenes were aired on 27th May in Episode 7610, a week shy of her 42nd anniversary on the soap. The character would be occasionally mentioned until her off-screen death the following April.

Rise of the event episode

In January, Andrew Lancel joined the programme as new villain Frank Foster, a factory client who was accused of trying to force himself on Maria Connor during a business meeting at his home. Maria was not believed, leaving Frank free to romance Carla Connor. Maria's role in the storyline was originally intended to be filled by Michelle Connor but rewrites took place after Kym Marsh embarked on maternity leave earlier than planned [4].

Ciaran McCarthy, Michelle's partner, was written out with her after Keith Duffy quit in order to go on tour with Boyzone [5]. A three-week stint in November when Marsh returned from maternity concluded Duffy's time in the role, with Ciaran leaving the Street to work on a cruise ship.

With viewing figures during Britain's Got Talent week peaking at over ten million, in a month where ratings were traditionally on the wane, the production team was encouraged to pull the same trick again later in the year. The first week of September was another event week made up of post-watershed episodes, in which Stella Price was run over by Carla Connor in a drink driving incident. The storyline was described by The Sun as a "last throw of the dice" for Stella, who they noted as having proved unpopular with viewers, while the News of the World laid into Collins's northern accent [6]. Phil Collinson and Michelle Collins appeared on This Morning on 12th July to address the backlash [7]. Kieran Roberts also spoke up for Collinson, refuting tabloid claims that the programme focused too much on gay characters and contextualise the lower viewing figures over the summer months, which had been used to attack the show [8]. The car crash storyline set up Frank Foster's rape of Carla, which was aired two weeks later.

In the spring, Coronation Street experimented with stand-alone Sunday episodes. The first, transmitted on Easter Sunday, included scenes shot on location in London in which Sean Tully visited his son Dylan [9]. Violet Wilson, Jamie Baldwin and Marcus Dent appeared for the first time since 2008, with Charlie Condou re-joining the serial as Marcus on a permanent basis a month later. Back in Weatherfield, Todd Grimshaw made a rare visit home to introduce Eileen to his boyfriend Jools Creme. A second Sunday episode shown the following week focused entirely on a secret day-trip to Blackpool by Steve, Tracy and Amy.

A long-awaited return, and the rest

Philip Lowrie, one of Coronation Street's original cast members, had recently taken part in the 50th anniversary tie-in programmes. Afterwards, his agent interested Phil Collinson in resurrecting the character of Dennis Tanner, the programme's original bad boy. Dennis was brought back in May as a homeless man who received help from his old acquaintance, Rita Sullivan. Lowrie's return to the role after a 43-year gap was a TV record which was recognised by Guinness with an award that September [10]. Dennis's presence in the Street also prompted writers to address the fate of his mother Elsie, who was last seen in 1984. Tony Warren wrote an ending for the character he created, describing her death in a car crash in Portugal several years earlier which was related to Rita by Dennis.

Tommy Duckworth appeared as an adult for the first time, now played by former Hollyoaks actor Chris Fountain, thus keeping the Duckworth lineage going. Tommy was set up as a love interest for Tina McIntyre, whose current partner Graeme Proctor was being written out at the behest of actor Craig Gazey. Although a short-term character, Graeme's new wife Xin Chiang was the Street's first Chinese resident [11]. They were married in a double wedding with David Platt and Kylie Turner, who met up while on holiday in Tenerife. Incorporating Kylie into the Platt clan was designed to give Paula Lane's character a permanent role in the show after her deal with Becky was exposed. With Kylie ultimately regaining custody of her son Max Turner, David took his new responsibilities as a father seriously, sending the character in a new, more mature, direction.

Other returnees included Brian Packham, Amber Kalirai and Trevor Dean, the latter only briefly as he met up with Janice Battersby and convinced her to go travelling around Europe with him. After 14 years with the show, Vicky Entwistle had decided to leave. As the year came to a close, Janice's role as factory loudmouth was filled by Beth Tinker, who had appeared in August as an old girlfriend of Steve's who had let herself go. Lisa George's comedic performance having gone down well, she became a full-time character in December along with her teenage son Craig, played by Colson Smith.

Among the newcomers were Stephanie Cole as Roy Cropper's formidable mother Sylvia Goodwin, Natalie Gumede as policewoman Kirsty Soames, Tyrone Dobbs's new girlfriend, and Ellie Leach as Faye Butler, the Windasses' nine-year-old foster and later adoptive daughter. The storyline saw Eddie Windass written out - leaving Weatherfield to work in Germany - in order to free up Anna for a relationship with Owen Armstrong. The merged Windass and Armstrong families greeted another new arrival on Christmas Eve when Katy gave birth to Joseph, her son with Chesney Brown. Twins Ronny and Tommy Cheetham were the first to play Joseph.

Sacha Parkinson left the role of Sian Powers at the end of the year to further her career away from Coronation Street. The programme's first gay wedding was held just ahead of her exit, although Sian and Sophie ultimately did not go ahead with the ceremony. Meanwhile, Cheryl, Chris and Russ Gray were axed, with their exits co-inciding with Craig Charles embarking on a break to shoot a new series of Red Dwarf. Coronation Street's accidental serial killer John Stape fell to his apparent death from the roof of Weatherfield General during Britain's Got Talent week. Graeme Hawley returned to the role four months later, John having inexplicably survived the fall, before finally succumbing to injuries sustained in a car crash. Finally, Rula Lenska made the last of her occasional appearances as Audrey Roberts's friend Claudia Colby until 2018.

More spin-offs

Two more online spin-offs were commissioned following the success of Gary's Army Diaries. Ken and Deirdre's Bedtime Stories was a series of ten weekly shorts, each starring Ken and Deirdre Barlow as they retire to bed and discuss the events of the day - or in Ken's case, dealing with Deirdre's constant interruptions as he makes his way through Hilary Mantel's Booker prize-winning novel Wolf Hall. The series was written by Jonathan Harvey and released online between February and April.

Just Rosie titles

A three-part web drama entitled Just Rosie premiered on the official website on 26th September, following a viral marketing campaign including a Facebook page and a separate website containing blog entries supposedly written by Rosie Webster as she seeks fame and fortune in London. The series itself followed the same premise, including an appearance by Rosie on the morning show Lorraine with Lorraine Kelly. Filming took place following Helen Flanagan's return to the programme after a three-month break. A problematic shoot resulting from Flanagan's panic attacks led to the actress's mutually agreed exit from Coronation Street, which aired the following February.

Viewing figures

Ratings chart for the year

Logging a BARB average of 8.68 million viewers for the year, 2011's post-anniversary high was not enough to reverse the general downward trend in ratings, dropping 800,000 viewers from 2010 - the lowest of any year to up to this point and the steepest drop since 2006 - and with eleven out of twelve months losing viewers compared to those from the year before. Not surprisingly, the biggest falls came in November and December, but January to April were also down by more than half a million viewers apiece. The only outlier was June, which was up by 250,000 viewers.

The most-watched episode of 2011 was Episode 7536 on 14th February, in which Peter Barlow exposed Leanne Battersby as an adulterer at their blessing. 11.78 million viewers watched the episode, a number in line with the peak rating of 2009.

The number of episodes reaching number one in the charts dipped below ten for the first time since 2001 - or 1978, discounting years in which omnibus editions were included in the final totals. Only nine out of 263 episodes reached the top, compared with 16 in 2010.
