Stuart Haley was a Manchester Polytechnic fresher in 1989. On his first day, Stuart couldn't find the lecture theatre for Environmental Studies, and ended up tagging along with Jenny Bradley and Kate Winterton who were similarly lost. Later, Stuart suggested they go for a coffee, but Jenny declined as her mind was on Alan Bradley's upcoming trial.
Stuart remained friends with Jenny and went along to Kevin and Sally Webster's third wedding anniversary party as Jenny's guest. A few weeks after that, he went to a disco with Jenny at the Poly. They were met outside by Alan, who was waiting to speak to Jenny. Having not seen her dad since his release from Risley Remand Centre, Jenny briefly introduced the pair and then told Stuart she'd see him later.
