Sue Johnston

Susan "Sue" Johnston OBE was born on 7th December, 1943 in Warrington, Cheshire. She is a BAFTA nominated actress best known for playing Sheila Grant in the long-running soap opera Brookside, Grace Foley in Waking the Dead and Barbara Royle in the BBC comedy series The Royle Family. Having previously guest-starred on Coronation Street as Mrs Chadwick in 1982, Sue then returned to the programme as Gloria Price between 2012 and 2014. Back in 1998, she had played the part of the older Patricia Phoenix in the ITV drama The Things You Do For Love (with Denise Black playing the actress in her younger days).

Johnston grew up in Prescot, Lancashire and attended Whiston Infants School, Eccleston Park Junior School and Prescot & Huyton Grammar School for Girls - leaving at the age of seventeen after only one year of her "A" level course. She worked as a tax inspector before enrolling at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London - at the age of twenty-one.

Her many other TV and film credits include roles in Goodbye Cruel World, In Suspicious Circumstances, Inspector Morse, A Touch of Frost, Full Stretch, Medics, Brassed Off, Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, Crime Traveller, Verdict, Duck Patrol, The Jump, Sex, Chips & Rock n' Roll, My Uncle Silas, Cutting It, The Street, Little Dorrit, Jam & Jerusalem, The Turn of the Screw, A Passionate Woman, Sugartown, Lapland and Gates.

She was awarded the OBE in the 2009 Queen's Birthday Honours List for her services to Drama and to Charity.

After her stint on Coronation Street, Johnston joined the cast of Downton Abbey for its fifth season.
