The Waitress worked in a casino on Canalside Road where Roy Cropper, putting aside the principles of a lifetime, went to play blackjack in an attempt to get back the losses incurred by his mother, Sylvia Goodwin, who had developed a gambling addiction.

As Roy accumulated his winnings on the table, the waitress offered him and his party of Sylvia, Ken Barlow and Dennis Tanner a drink. The teetotal Roy asked for a hot chocolate and Sylvia told him that he couldn't ask for such beverages in a casino. Unfazed, the waitress asked him if he wanted whipped cream and Roy said yes, but no marshmallows.
