Fulton Mackay (12th August 1922 - 6th June 1987) appeared in early episodes of Coronation Street as Dr. Graham, who ministered Ena Sharples and Elsie Tanner at various times. A trained quantity surveyor, he served with the Black Watch during the Second World War. After the war he trained at RADA.

Born in Paisley, the Scots actor will be best remembered for his role as the dour, strict Mr. Mackay in Porridge. As well as appearing in the first episode of the sequal series Going Straight he guest-starred in, amongst many other roles, Doctor Who, The Vital Spark and the Morecambe and Wise comedy thriller Night Train to Murder. He played a leading role in the first two series of Special Branch and the earliest episodes of Fraggle Rock were book-ended by appearances by Mackay as a kindly lighthouse keeper. On film he has a pivotal role in the popular movie Local Hero.

As a footnote to his career there are two major roles that he was considered for that intriguingly never happened. He was considered for the role of the Doctor in Doctor Who as a possible replacement for Jon Pertwee in 1974. It was also planned that he would take over from Brian Wilde in the third-man role in Last of the Summer Wine.

He died of stomach cancer aged 64. His partner was Sheila Manhan.
