The Gazette Photographer covered a sit-in by the staff of the recently-demolished Baldwin's Casuals at the building site in Coronation Street in October 1989. The girls were seeking compensation from Maurice Jones for causing them to lose their jobs, and had moved to more desperate measures after diplomatic methods had failed.
The high point of the day came when the cement lorry driver refused orders to bring the vehicle into the yard, and returned it to the depot instead. The girls took this as a minor victory, and Deirdre Barlow gave him a peck on the cheek as a thank you. The Weatherfield Gazette phtographer got Deirdre to repeat the kiss for the camera, giving him a centrepiece for the article.
