Geordie was an old friend of Alan Howard's who he bumped into in the Rovers Return Inn on Boxing Day 1971 during a period when his marriage to Elsie was on the rocks and he had spent a miserable Christmas alone, camping down at the Canal Garage. Geordie was an accomplished piano player from the North East of England and Alan asked him to play one of the traditional Tyneside songs on the pub piano, singing wistfully along as he did so.
- Credited as "Pianist", the character's name - or possibly nickname - was given in dialogue.
