George Harrop was a storeman at the Mark Brittain Warehouse and a friend of Ivy Tilsley's who comforted her when she was going through a rough patch with her husband Jack in 1972. Ivy was in two minds whether to make up with Jack after catching him in their house with his fancy piece, Cheryl Crowther, but the situation wasn't helped by her meeting George in the Rovers and letting him kiss her in public. The balding man asked Ivy to move in with him in his terraced house. Ivy decided not to take George up on his offer and returned to Jack, telling Elsie Howard that she could no more live with George than she could get into a 34 frock.

When the character of Ivy Tilsley became more prominent in the late 1970s, a new backstory was created for her and her husband Jack Tilsley was written out of Coronation Street history. The canonicity of any storylines involving Jack are thus unclear.
