Grampian Television, whose region covered Northern Scotland, began transmissions on the ITV network on Saturday 30th September 1961 and showed its first episode of Coronation Street (Episode 84) two days later. The station began colour transmissions on the tenth anniversary of its launch in 1971 with Episode 1118 of Coronation Street being the first episode to be shown in that medium five days later. A strike at the station from 6th to 18th September 1974 meant that viewers in the region never saw Episodes 1424, 1425 or 1426.

The company was bought out by the Scottish Media Group (who also own Scottish Television) in 1997 and its on-screen identity was changed to STV North on 30th May 2006.
