Gregory Paul "Greg" Kelly was Les Battersby's illegitimate son who abused Sally Webster while attempting to scam Mike Baldwin in 1998.

Raised by his mother Moira Kelly, Greg showed up in Coronation Street to meet the father he'd never known. He quickly joined Underworld as a sales consultant and set his sights on Sally, using her to bankroll his business interests with her mother's inheritance. When Mike learned of his scheme to poach his customers and fired Greg, Greg blamed Sally and became violent towards her, causing her to leave him.

Obsessed with getting his own back on Sally and Mike, Greg was arrested after breaking into 10a Coronation Street and threatening Sally. Months later, he paid Julia Stone to seduce Mike so that he could blackmail him, and held Sally, Rosie and Sophie hostage when Mike refused to pay up. The siege ended with the police storming No.13 and Greg being charged with assault and unlawful imprisonment.

Biography[]

Greg was the fruit of a holiday romance between Moira Kelly and Les Battersby when Les was working on a travelling fairground on the Isle of Wight. Despite Moira giving him her address before she returned home, Les didn't stay in touch and, until Greg turned up in Weatherfield in April 1998, was unaware that he had a son. Moira raised Greg alone for a few years, working as a secretary to make ends meet, and she eventually married her much-older boss, Harry Wood, who raised little Greg as his own, much to the resentment of Harry's own two sons, Greg's stepbrothers. Moira told Greg the truth of his past when he was seven, but it took Harry's death in September 1997 to spur Greg on to seek his natural father.

Greg claimed to have played professional football, but that injury put paid to his career, so he had followed Harry into the retail fashion business. However, following Harry's death, Greg was out of work and relying on Moira for money, but she threatened to cut him off when he still hadn't found a job after six months. Thus Greg traced Les using a private detective and turned up in Weatherfield to introduce himself.

Despite quickly realising that Les could offer him no financial help, Greg struck up a relationship with his father and soon became more involved in the life of the street, embarking on a romance with Maxine Heavey, a local hairdresser. But Greg would always be on the lookout for his next conquest, romantic or financial. He convinced Mike Baldwin to take him on as a business partner - Greg would broker the deals, Mike would pay him commission. Mike agreed, and Greg went to work at Underworld, a knicker factory.

He soon turned his attention to Sally Webster, who had just lost her mother and inherited £55,000, which was very appealing to Greg. He was less interested in her than in her money, and set out to relieve her of it. He seduced Sally, and ended his relationship with Maxine, having conned her out of renting the flat above the Corner Shop. Sally left Kevin and the girls, for what she thought was a committed relationship with a new, exciting man. She took the girls from Kevin, and moved them into the one-bedroom flat above the shop. It was a cramped arrangement that Greg disliked. But he needed Sally's money if he was to make a go of his business venture, so he tried unsuccessfully to learn the girls' names, and to play happy families. But he did not want to play parent, and left the flat as often as he could. It became clear to all but Sally that Greg was simply using her.

After stealing business contacts from Mike's computer at the factory, Greg took Sally's money and launched his own company. Mike, not easily taken in, fought back and regained the contracts.

By now, Greg had opened a shop, with Sally as his secretary rather than his business partner. The loss of business contracts proved a turning point in their relationship, however. Unhappy with their living arrangements, especially with the girls, Greg's temper simmered for weeks. Then, upon discovering that Sally had told Gail about the contracts, he exploded and hit Sally, blaming her for his misfortunes. Stunned, Sally threatened to leave, until Greg convinced her it was a one-off, and that it wouldn't happen again.

Greg had spoken to his solicitor to find out what would happen if he and Sally were to split. The solicitor confirmed that Greg needed Sally and her fast-dwindling capital, in order to stay in business. Greg needed a new plan to hold on to his financial security. Sally, Rosie and Sophie were cramping both his style and his flat, but he resolved to deal with the difficulty for the time being, a means to an end. It was a short-lived respite from the violence. After a second beating from Greg, Sally took the girls, and what remained of her bank account, and fled to stay with her old friend Rita Sullivan without looking back.

Greg, behind on his rent, was threatened with eviction by Fred Elliott from the pokey flat over the shop, and his life spun out of control. A shadow of his former self, he turned once again to Maxine, who before long realised she was being used, and sent him packing. Out of options, he ended up at 5 Coronation Street living with Les and his family, an all-time low.

Blaming Sally for all of his problems, Greg began stalking and threatening her. She feared for her safety and that of her daughters. On New Year's Eve 1998, Greg, drunk and unhinged, broke into Rita's flat and threatened Sally, vowing to make her pay for what she'd done. She fled to the safety of the Street. Greg was then arrested.

Later that year, Greg returned to the street. He threatened to reveal to Alma what happened between Mike and a woman he sent to have sex with him then threaten him with photo negatives if he didn't pay up £10,000. He ended up confronting Sally and held her and the girls hostage. When he went to attack the girls she smashed a chair over his head, knocking him out. He was arrested soon after.
