Helen Kay appeared on Coronation Street in two roles: firstly as Weatherfield Gazette reporter Jo Simpson, who in April 2001 was investigating a mix-up in women's smear testing; and she returned to the programme in January 2018 as a Doctor at Weatherfield General who tended to Carla Connor after she was found unconscious by Brian Packham and transported to hospital by Roy Cropper.

She trained at the Guildford School of Acting and on-screen credits include roles in Cold Feet, Real Men, Emmerdale, Heartbeat, Doctors, The Royal Today, Lunch Monkeys, Shameless, The Syndicate and Prey. On stage she has appeared in productions of Too Much Punch for Judy, Murder on the Nile, Revenge, The Far Corner, Hedda Gabler, Macbeth, Absurd Person Singular, Quixotry, Parlour Song, The Rain King, David Copperfield and Brassed Off.
