Ian Mercer (born 7th January 1961 in Oldham) appeared on Coronation Street in two roles: between April and June 1987 as Pete Jackson, an old army mate of Terry Duckworth; and he returned to the programme between October 1995 and October 2000 as Gary Mallett.

On leaving school, he trained as an electrical engineer but decided upon an acting career when he was employed as an assistant stage manager at the Oldham Coliseum in 1979.

Other TV work includes roles in Brookside, How We Used to Live, The Monocled Mutineer, Screenplay, Cracker, Common As Muck, A Touch of Frost, The Street, Holby City, Red Riding, Waking the Dead, Shameless, Doctors, Scott & Bailey, In the Club and Churchill's Secret. On film, credits include the Hollywood epics Master and Commander: the Far Side of the World and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. On stage he acted in a play entitled The York Realist at the Strand Theatre in London, and toured the UK in The Full Monty alongside Tracy Brabin, Kenny Doughty and Craig Gazey.

He graduated from Northumbria University with a degree in English and Art History in 2007.
