When the residents of Coronation Street ended up in hospital after the coach taking them on a trip to the Lake District in October 1969 crashed, the Police Inspector attempted to take details from fellow officer and victim, Sergeant Cyril Turpin, as he questioned him in the casualty waiting room. Cyril though was distracted with worry as to what had happened to his beloved wife Betty and unable to think coherently. Only when Betty, her arm slightly injured, appeared at his side was a delighted Cyril able to snap to attention and give his superior officer a statement outlining what had happened at the time of the incident.
