Irene Sutcliffe (12th July 1924 - 3rd May 2019) was a British actress who enjoyed a high level of fame and popularity when she played shopkeeper Maggie Clegg on Coronation Street from 1968 to 1975.
She originally wanted to be a dancer but she decided she was not good enough. In the theatre she worked with Laurence Olivier in Shakespeare and was in Richard III at the Old Vic, toured Europe, the Middle East and America and was part of the cast of Agatha Christie's record-breaking play The Mousetrap for one year. Her other credits include Poldark, All Creatures Great and Small, The Bill and Doc Martin and, again on the stage, The Day After The Fair.
